I've been linking to press releases and articles on Posterous for quite a few months now, although I've received relatively few comments and retweets for my troubles. Should I just use this Posterous to link to articles originating from URBMN? It seems like a frivolous waste of time if it's not helping the site.

| Press Release/CBC Missive: Everyone, Every Way: CBC/Radio-Canada's strategy for the future |
[01 Feb 2011|07:24pm] |
http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/February2011/01/c6895.html http://www.cbc.radio-canada.ca/strategy2015/index.shtml Basically, this boils down to an increased online presence, and regionalism. You remember regionalism, right? The thing CBC had been hacking away at by basing more of its shows in Vancouver and Toronto? The thing CBC was trying to drain from its local newscasts in favour of Frank Magid-isms? Yeah, that regionalism. Crazy! As for things like "innovative, high-quality Canadian content," show me that you can do something better than InSecurity and The Ron James Show, and that you're truly interested in bringing in new talents to the radio and television networks. Until then, I don't buy the promises. As an aside, CBC should bring back radio drama and something that approximates Brave New Waves. Radio drama doesn't rake in the bucks, but it builds a talent pool that may transfer to television down the line. Afternoon reruns of Ideas and Quirks & Quirks just doesn't cut it.

| Radio News: CKLN faces the music |
[30 Jan 2011|10:56am] |
http://toronto.openfile.ca/toronto/file/2011/01/ckln-faces-music I know people are complaining about CKLN's forced closure and pushing to appeal the station's license revocation, but not filling out station logs - even if you're reairing old program blocks during a lockout - is a serious thing. That's one of the basic requirements of a station. Maybe CKLN got its shit together after its 2008 power struggle, but then, this Torontoist article is a big strike against that theory. Illegally rebroadcasting a Seattle jazz show feed?! How do you swing that? Arguments and political conspiracy theories abound, but come on. This is the sort of thing that would make a pacifist want to haul ass. Bottom line is, CKLN has been toxic since at least 2008, at least from the articles I've read. It's best to expand SPIRITlive, which is produced by Ryerson's School of Radio & Television Arts students, into the community radio role. I don't know how well it's run, but it's obvious CKLN is a mess. One has to wonder if similar rot has crept into other community and university campus stations. As an anecdotal aside, the best-run campus/community station I've heard is Loyalist College's 91X, from Belleville, Ontario. It's overly commercial, but then, those students are being trained for jobs in the radio industry. Technical colleges seem to have it together more than the universities. Maybe that's me.
